Caregiver Story: The Edge

September 1, 2025 | Stories, Your Well-Being

I won’t let it prevail. I’ll try not to fail to answer joyfully.

A guest post from Ann Favreau:

My husband was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2021. As a caregiver of my husband, I experienced all those aggravating questions and repetitions that come with his condition.

For the most part, I recognized my husband’s words for what they were, and I tried to respond cheerfully. Even simple conversation required a new set of rules.

Although I made the effort to be as positive as I could, I was aware of some of my negative behaviors. I’m a writer and a poet, so writing about our situation has helped me reflect on the impact of dementia … not only on my husband, but also on me as his primary caregiver.

Here’s a poem I wrote about living on “the edge.” Perhaps you can relate to my situation.

The life of a caregiver is an ongoing journey. At times, we need to recognize our limitations and simply do the best we can.

The Edge

I sense it,
The edge,
The insidious edge
Creeping into my voice.

The cheery lilt is fading,
Upbeat tone evading
A positive response.

It’s just the repetitions
That cause the aggravations
Even though, I know
His world is shrinking.

Think before I speak
Let a smile streak
Across my veiled face.

Put impatience aside,
Anxiety hide.
Banish annoyance.

I won’t let it prevail.
I’ll try not to fail
To answer joyfully.

Knowing that he won’t recall
But I’ll know when all
I say is tinged,
Shaded with the edge,
The insidious

creeping

edge.
